Wayne, New Jersey, 2006)— Doug Scancarella, published by iUniverse, Inc., the leading provider of publishing technology solutions for authors, announced today the completion of his first sports fiction novel, ‘Gridiron Grit.’ The book is directed primarily at a young adult readership.
Doug Scancarella | About the Author: Doug Scancarella has been writing about athletics since he graduated from Villanova in 1990. He works for the New York Times and lives with his wife and children in Wayne, New Jersey. |
Gridiron Grit | About Gridiron Grit: When Joey Amendola notices a newcomer in his fourth grade class, he is immediately intrigued. Poland native Bruno Garlinsky appears to be a promising potential addition to his football team.
Bruno barely speaks English and seems to have little in common with the other boys. However, his unfamiliarity with the culture doesn't last long. Joey convinces him to participate in sports. And, like Joey, he turns out to be an exceptional athlete. The two friends eventually become star players for East High and find themselves in the middle of a heated rivalry with crosstown West High. East has a proud football past, but repeatedly loses to West due in part to the questionable practice of redshirting players - holding them back in school so they can gain a physical advantage.
Players from both schools and their supporters become embroiled in controversy during a nail-biting season. The fervor splits the town philosophically because emphasis on victory at all cost is on a collision course with emphasis on education first. Emotions run high and spill over into the community. Will the antagonism continue to divide the town of Mountainside or will it be settled on the gridiron.
